Melinda:

Fitting that you should comment to this post, since it was you, as I recall, who took the brunt of my Ayn Rand-inspired rants in college. :) I'm happy to say that Rand's spell on me has mostly worn off. I say "mostly" because I still agree with her emphasis on setting your own standards and doggedly pursuing them.

You're so right that we tend to lose this ability as we grow older, when the drive to innovate gets supplanted by the nervous drive to succeed. If the Fountainhead could inspire kids to retain their unselfconscious creativity, then I'd be all for adding it to the syllabus. (Although you'd have to redact that bizarre quasi-rape sex scene. I'd be curious to hear what you and Mac thought of that part.)

And thanks for going off subject. :)

I would love to see the graphic novel depiction of Howard Roark from Fountainhead. Over the past year I've searched the streets for a true embodiment of this unbelievably bad-ass character. After reading Fountainhead with my boyfriend last year, we talked a lot about how these books should be incorporated into early education. A lesson in setting your own standards. Something that, sadly, I find incredibly difficult to do. I have standards and goals that I'm excited about, but if I trace back these goals to the source, I can often find external influences or models for almost everything. It's very hard to find that completely original voice. But maybe it's possible if you introduce this way of thinking to very young kids. Maybe they could learn to stay focused on what they, as creative individuals, really want. Got off subject from your post, but isn't that what blogs are for?
