‘Tis the Season for Manhattans!

If you have not had the pleasure of drinking a Manahattan, now, as cold weather sets in, is the time to indulge. This whiskey drink will warm your core.Manahattan photo from Flickr

Here are the ingredients:

2 shots bourbon
1 shot sweet vermouth
1 dash of Angostora bitters
1 marachino cherry

Mix with ice, strain into glass.

And feel free to deviate from the proportions listed here. Provided it tastes good to you and includes all of the above ingredients, there’s no wrong way to mix a Manhattan.

Caution: this drink is quite strong. Unless you imbibe frequently and/or have a hefty avoirdupois, limit to two if you plan on operating heavy machinery (a car, for example) afterward.

And be sure to ask for it “up” when ordering at a bar.

So sue me, I have the tendency to drink whiskey every now and again. One question: Is it okay to just mix the whiskey with water?

    Sogan:

I can’t argue with that! What kind of whiskey do you prefer?

I have to include L. Rust Hills description of a manhattan (from the book How to do Things Right: The Revelations of a Fussy Man): “A manhattan is a much underrated drink: it is kind of sticky and you certainly wouldn’t want it every night or even every other night; but it is a cheerful drink, and if it is cold and bleak (the weather, I mean) and you wish you had an open fire, a manhattan is good, perhaps because the cherry in it has soem of the same warm color.”

I agree Mariah whiskey is great when mixed with poetic prose. Especially Jim Beam (Jeb). Hints of coconut and caramel. I think that a whiskey with a hint of cinnamon would go well in a cold and bleak setting.

Whiskey is evil. it was evil last night. I spent the day cursing whiskey in all its evil forms. Or it could have been the aqua blue elixer that was ingested from a fish bowl. Yay New York!
